ニール・ヤングNeil Young（1945年～）は、エレクトリックなハードロックからアコースティックなフォーク・カントリーまで幅が広い音楽スタイルをもつ。
「Comes a Time」は同名のアルバム「Comes a Time」（1978年）収録。
フォークロック調の軽快なメロディーで、カントリーの要素も加わっている。
アルバム収録曲の「Lotta Love 溢れる愛」は、ニール・ヤング作詞・作曲の曲で、ボツになりかかっていたが、ニコレット・ラーソンNicolette Larson（1952年～1997年）がヤングのデモテープを聴いて、シングル化を希望したため、ヤングもアルバムに収録することにした。ニコレット・ラーソンのシングルはデビューヒットとなった。
このアルバムやLive at Farm Aid （1986)では、ニコレット・ラーソンのバッキング・ボーカルが聴ける。

アルバムではアコースティック版の「My My, Hey Hey (Out ofthe Blue)」を最初に置き、エレクトリック版のこの曲を最後に置いている。
1977年にパンクロックが台頭すると、ヤングは自分たちが時代遅れの存在になると感じた。パンクロックに触発されて、セックス・ピストルズのジョニー・ロットンをモチーフに作った楽曲。
この曲により、若い世代にも受け入れられ、大音量とメロディーのブレンドはのちのグランジロックに影響を与え、ニール・ヤングは「グランジのゴッドファーザー」とよばれることとなった。
曲としては、「Like A Hurricane」や「Rockin in the Free World」に比べると、たいした曲ではないが、「MyMy, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)の歌詞「it's better toburn out than to fade away」がニルヴァーナのカート・コバーンの遺書に引用された。この１節はヤングの友人Jeff Blackburn （The Ducks）の言葉という。
アルバムタイトルの「rust never sleeps」はニール・ヤング主演の映画「Human Highway」制作に参加したニューウェーブバンドのディーヴォに影響されたもので、「Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)」も映画のなかで歌われた。
「Out of the blue and into the black」はベトナム戦争のとき、ベトコンが作ったトンネルに侵入する米軍部隊が使った用語という。
